Marie-Louise Martin: 'Hidden in plain sight

  • Courthouse Arts Centre Dwyer Square Tinahely, County Wicklow, Ireland (map)

An exhibition celebrating the beauty in the ordinary.

“Line has always been foremost in my work practice, and for many years I worked solely in etching. After almost 40 years, I decided to move away from the toxic materials and acids I had been using, to employing greener methods. With the move to drypoint, I have returned to my first love; drawing. I also like the challenge with working on acetate sheets as there is little or no way of correcting a mark made.

This decision to change was made during the pandemic and the various lockdowns. With the change of practice I felt a complete change of subject was needed too; and I found this on walks and in looking at my surroundings in a different way. With the absence of people and cars, I had a heightened awareness, and found a strange, ethereal beauty in abandoned places and objects: beauty that I had barely noticed in the past.

The prints are in a large format; taking many weeks, and several states, until they are finished. The title of the series, Hidden in plain sight, invites the viewer to look, as I did, just a little closer at their environment; and perhaps to also see the unexpected beauty in the everyday.”
